Cover crops as a weed seed bank management tool: A soil down review

چکیده

This review explores ways that cover crops alter soil environmental conditions can be used to decrease seed survival, maintain weed dormancy, and reduce germination cues, thus reducing above-ground pressures. Cover are grown between cash in rotation, their residues persist into subsequent crops, impacting seeds both during after crops’ growth. Compared no crop, may seedling recruitment density via: i) temperature fluctuations thereof; ii) light availability altering quality; iii) trapping nitrogen the making it less soil-available weeds. In addition, provide habitat for above- below-ground fauna, resulting increased predation. The allelopathic nature of some also suppress However, not all effects discourage weeds, such as potentially increasing oxygen. Furthermore, moisture while actively growing but conserve termination, time-dependent effects. Similarly, decaying legume release soil, aiding multiplicity crop species mixtures, differing responses species, conditions, other factors hampers uniform recommendations complicates management producers. But, managed maximize biomass, do increase nitrogen, terminated at or planting will have greatest potential attenuate bank. There still many questions answered, if targeting efforts bank level is agronomically worthwhile. Future research on should include measurements banks, including dormancy status, predation levels, germination. A review of the potential for competitive cereal cultivars as a tool in integrated weed management

Competitive crop cultivars offer a potentially cheap option to include in integrated weed management strategies (IWM). Although cultivars with high competitive potential have been identified amongst cereal crops, competitiveness has not traditionally been considered a priority for breeding or farmer cultivar choice. The challenge of managing herbicide-resistant weed populations has, however, re...

Weed Control with Cover Crops in Irrigated Potatoes

Field experiments at Oakes, ND, USA in 2010 and Carrington, ND, USA in 2011 were conducted to evaluate the potential for cover crops grown in the Northern Great Plains, USA in order to reduce weed emergence and density in irrigated potatoes. Treatments included five cover crop treatments and three cover crop termination treatments. Termination of cover crops was done with glyphosate, disk-till,...

Allelopathic Weed Suppression Through the Use of Cover Crops

There has long been observed an inhibitive response by plant species to certain neighboring plants. The Greek philosopher and botanist, Theophrastus, noted this effect from cabbage as early as 300 BC (Willis 1985). Since that time, others have documented similar plant interactions. In 1937, Austrian botanist, Hans Molisch, described this phenomenon as allelopathy, which he determined to be the ...

Comparison of Seed Bank Estimation Techniques Using Six Weed Species in Two Soil Types

Evaluation of the viable seeds in a soil, otherwise known as the seed pool or seed bank, is a crucial component of many weed dynamic and plant ecology studies. Seed bank estimation is used to predict the possibility of future weed infestations in rangelands as well as the nascent native plant diversity within them. However, there is no standardized method of reporting seed bank evaluation techn...
